Appropriate Clients for Rehabilitation
Appropriate clients:
- function at Level 6+ on the Rancho
Los Amigos Scale of Cognitive Levels
- have TBI, stroke, brain tumor survivors,
developmental disability
- are able to learn new data
- are motivated to improve
- are relatively free of secondary gain
- are free of persistent agitation &
severe memory deficits
- have a supportive environment
- are free from misuse of alcohol or
drugs
- have cognitive and physical conditions
that cause impairment with occupation and/or social function
Inappropriate clients are those functioning
below level 4 on the Ranchos Los Amigos Scale and those who are
moderately to severely mentally retarded.
Rancho Los Amigos Scale of Cognitive
Levels
- Level I
- no response: unresponsive to all stimuli
- Level II
- generalized: inconsistent, non-purposeful reactions
- Level III
- localized response: inconsistent reaction directly related
to type of stimuli
- Level IV
- confused, agitated: disoriented and unaware of present events
with frequent bizarre and inappropriate behavior; attention span
short
- Level V
- confused, inappropriate, nonagitated: nonpurposeful, random
responses when task complexity exceeds abilities.
- Level VI
- confused, appropriate: behavior is goal oriented, responses
are appropriate; incorrect behaviors result from memory difficulties.
- Level VII
- automatic, appropriate: correct routine responses that are
robot-like; oriented but poor insight, judgement.
- Level VIII
- purposeful, appropriate: correct responses, carryover of new
learning, no supervision needed; poor tolerance for stress, and
some abstract reasoning difficulties.
